Quantitative Aptitude Questions with Solutions

Question 1: Simplification

Problem: Simplify: (3² + 4²)¹/²

Solution: (3² + 4²)¹/² = (9 + 16)¹/² = (25)¹/² = 5

Question 2: Percentage

Problem: What is 20% of 120?

Solution: 20% of 120 = (20/100) × 120 = 0.20 × 120 = 24

Question 3: Ratio and Proportion

Problem: If a:b = 3:4 and b:c = 5:6, find a:c.

Solution: a:b = 3:4 b:c = 5:6

To combine, make b equal: a:b = 3:4 = 15:20 (multiplied by 5) b:c = 5:6 = 20:24 (multiplied by 4)

Therefore, a:b:c = 15:20:24 So a:c = 15:24 = 5:8

Question 4: Average

Problem: The average of 5 numbers is 20. If one number is excluded, the average becomes 18. Find the excluded number.

Solution: Sum of 5 numbers = 5 × 20 = 100 Sum of 4 numbers = 4 × 18 = 72 Excluded number = 100 - 72 = 28

Question 5: Time and Work

Problem: A can complete a work in 12 days and B can complete the same work in 18 days. If they work together, how many days will they take?

Solution: A's 1 day work = 1/12 B's 1 day work = 1/18

(A + B)'s 1 day work = 1/12 + 1/18 = (3 + 2)/36 = 5/36

Days required = 36/5 = 7.2 days

Question 6: Profit and Loss

Problem: A shopkeeper buys an article for ₹800 and sells it for ₹1000. Find his profit percentage.

Solution: Cost Price (CP) = ₹800 Selling Price (SP) = ₹1000 Profit = SP - CP = 1000 - 800 = ₹200

Profit % = (Profit/CP) × 100 = (200/800) × 100 = 25%

Question 7: Simple Interest

Problem: Find the simple interest on ₹5000 at 8% per annum for 3 years.

Solution: SI = (P × R × T)/100 SI = (5000 × 8 × 3)/100 SI = 120000/100 SI = ₹1200

Question 8: Speed and Distance

Problem: A train travels 360 km in 4 hours. Find its speed in m/s.

Solution: Speed = Distance/Time = 360/4 = 90 km/hr

To convert km/hr to m/s, multiply by 5/18: Speed = 90 × (5/18) = 25 m/s

Question 9: Number System

Problem: Find the HCF of 48 and 72.

Solution: 48 = 2⁴ × 3 72 = 2³ × 3²

HCF = 2³ × 3 = 8 × 3 = 24

Question 10: Area and Perimeter

Problem: Find the area of a circle with radius 7 cm.

Solution: Area = πr² Area = (22/7) × 7 × 7 Area = 22 × 7 Area = 154 cm²

Question 11: Volume

Problem: Find the volume of a cube with side 5 cm.

Solution: Volume = side³ Volume = 5³ Volume = 125 cm³

Question 12: Data Interpretation

Problem: The following table shows the marks obtained by a student in different subjects:

SubjectMarks
English75
Physics80
Chemistry70
Mathematics85

Find the average marks.

Solution: Total marks = 75 + 80 + 70 + 85 = 310 Number of subjects = 4 Average = 310/4 = 77.5

Question 13: Mensuration

Problem: The length and breadth of a rectangle are 12 cm and 8 cm respectively. Find its diagonal.

Solution: Diagonal = √(l² + b²) Diagonal = √(12² + 8²) Diagonal = √(144 + 64) Diagonal = √208 Diagonal = √(16 × 13) Diagonal = 4√13 cm

Question 14: Algebra

Problem: If x + 1/x = 5, find x² + 1/x².

Solution: We know: (x + 1/x)² = x² + 1/x² + 2

Therefore: x² + 1/x² = (x + 1/x)² - 2 x² + 1/x² = 5² - 2 x² + 1/x² = 25 - 2 x² + 1/x² = 23

Question 15: Trigonometry

Problem: Find the value of sin 30° + cos 60°.

Solution: sin 30° = 1/2 cos 60° = 1/2

sin 30° + cos 60° = 1/2 + 1/2 = 1

Reasoning Questions with Solutions

Question 1: Series Completion

Problem: Find the next term: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ?

Solution: 1 = 1² 4 = 2² 9 = 3² 16 = 4² 25 = 5²

Next term = 6² = 36

Question 2: Coding-Decoding

Problem: If 'TABLE' is coded as 'UBCMF', how is 'CHAIR' coded?

Solution: Pattern: Each letter is shifted by +1 T→U, A→B, B→C, L→M, E→F

Question 5: Direction Sense

Problem: A man walks 10 km towards East, turns right and walks 5 km, then turns right again and walks 10 km. How far is he from the starting point?

Solution: Visualizing:

  • Start at (0,0), walk 10 km East → (10, 0)
  • Turn right (South), walk 5 km → (10, -5)
  • Turn right (West), walk 10 km → (0, -5)

Distance from origin = 5 km (South)

Question 6: Logical Reasoning

Problem: Statements:

  1. All ships are vessels.
  2. All vessels are watercraft.

Conclusions: I. All ships are watercraft. II. Some watercraft are ships.

Solution: From the statements: All ships ⊂ vessels ⊂ watercraft

Problem: What day of the week was January 26, 2024 (Republic Day)?

Solution: Using odd days method:

  • 1600 years: 0 odd days
  • 400 years: 0 odd days
  • 23 years: 17 ordinary + 6 leap years = 29 odd days = 1 odd day
  • Days till Jan 26, 2024: 26 days = 5 odd days

Total odd days = 0 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 6

6 odd days = Friday
