Solution: Sum = n(n+1)/2 = 50 × 51/2 = 1275

A sum of money triples itself in 8 years at simple interest. Find the rate.

Solution: If sum triples, interest = 2P Rate = (SI × 100)/(P × T) = (2P × 100)/(P × 8) = 25%

The ratio of ages of A and B is 3:4. After 5 years, it will be 4:5. Find A's present age.

Solution: (3x + 5)/(4x + 5) = 4/5 15x + 25 = 16x + 20 x = 5 A's age = 3 × 5 = 15 years

A shopkeeper sold an article at 20% loss. If he had sold it for ₹150 more, he would have gained 10%. Find CP.

Solution: Let CP = x 0.8x + 150 = 1.1x 0.3x = 150 x = ₹500

Pipe A fills in 12 min, Pipe B in 15 min. Both open together, but B is closed after 3 min. How long to fill?

Solution: Work in 3 min = 3(1/12 + 1/15) = 3(9/60) = 9/20 Remaining = 11/20 A fills remaining in = (11/20) × 12 = 6.6 min Total = 3 + 6.6 = 9.6 minutes
